With 82 battlefields, museums, old fortifications and places of remembrance the Route boasts the largest concentration of significant Battles and war related sites than anywhere in South Africa.
Most trips start and end in Durban, the Capital of Kwa Zulu Natal. With new direct flights from London on British Airways, this region of South Africa has suddenly become even more accessible. In all honesty though, Durban itself is probably better avoided, but the northern coast is stunning. Our guests love the Oyster Box Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks and the Fairmont Zimbali Resort, all easily reached from King Shaka International Airport.
It is difficult to imagine that the scenic and tranquil landscape of central and northern KwaZulu-Natal was once the focal point of major military engagements, where Zulu, Boer and British forces clashed in bloody conflicts that shaped the course of South Africa and rocked the pedestal of the British Empire.
This green and pleasant region boasts the largest concentration of battlefields in the southern hemisphere, where over a period of some 70 years, one historical drama after another unfolded against the backdrop of the African veld, sweeping grasslands and the majestic mountains of the Drakensberg range.
Stay overlooking Isandlwana which saw the British Empire receive a shattering Zulu blow
- Discover the Battle of Rorke's Drift where just 150 Brits heroically repelled a 4,000-strong Zulu army
- At Blood River, fewer than 600 Boors avenged the murder of their leader by somehow defeating 12,000 Zulus.

The Hector Pietersen Museum with Antoinette Sithole
Antoinette Sithole is the sister to the late Hector Pieterson, who was killed by police in the June 16th, 1976 uprisings where students were protesting against being taught in the medium of Afrikaans. Hector Pieterson became a symbol for the uprisings as he was the youngest to be killed. Antoinette witnessed his death, and was the only survivor in the famous photo as seen on the left.
