Mozambique Island, Mozambique
Coral Beach Lodge, is stunning remote collection of ten individual villas on a beautiful peninsula located on Mozambique Island, off the coast of Mozambique.
It is places like this that inspire us to travel again. In a country ravaged for decades by civil war, Coral Beach Lodge is one of a number of stunning new lodges opening up in this country which is rapidly becoming one of the "must see" African destinations .
A modern beach resort, Coral Beach Lodge is the only lodge in the area and offers comfotable traditional-style decor in 10 luxury suites.
Five of the villas have a direct ocean view, situated on top of the dunes overlooking the beach. The other five are more secluded & have a view over the mangrove forest and Ilha de Moçambique. The villas were designed by Edward van Vliet using a mixture of African and modern designs. Each has its own private lounge area, large bed and en-suite bathroom with both a bath and a shower. There is a large deck area, perfect for sundowners and relaxing. In two of the villas an extra bedroom is included for two children or an extra adult. The extra bedroom has its own separate loo and basin.
The Coral Lodge bungalows have large king size beds, with sophisticated over-bed airconditioning systems. Each bedroom is en-suite with a bath and shower.
Each bungalow has access down to the beach, half are located on the ocean side of the peninsular, the other half on the lagoon side. Each room has a large living area, if needed this can be used as an extra bedroom.
There are two family rooms at Coral Lodge. One is located on the ocean side of the peninsular, the other on the lagoon side. They are the same size as the normal bungalows, however, the rooms have been divided to create a second bedroom with either bunk beds or twins.
The lounge bar and restaurant, The Reef, is situated at the very tip of the peninsula. The building is an open wooden structure with a high thatched roof that can accommodate in and outdoor dining. There is a large salt-water infinity pool, with views over the ocean & lagoon as well as a spa with a range of treatments for guests to enjoy.
The Coral Lodge dive centre is stocked with top quality Scubapro diving equipment. Professional dive masters are on hand to help you explore the reefs just off the coast.
The reefs of the area have both hard and soft corals, and countless species of small fish. Larger open ocean predators are attracted to the reefs often resulting in spectacular underwater sightings of dolphins or game fish. An important but dangerous trading route, due to the treacherous sandbars, reefs and tropical storms, the coast of Mozambique is home to numerous shipwrecks. Some 17th century Portuguese vessels lie off the coast from Coral Lodge and it is possible to find many pieces of broken Chinese porcelain, trading beads, canons and old Portuguese coins.
For those preferring to stay on the surface, the lagoon offers good snorkelling. As the tide runs out many small fish are trapped in the water of the lagoon creating a temporary colourful aquarium.
Between August and October whales migrate along the Mozambican Coast, moving away from the cold southern seas to breed in the warm Indian Ocean. It is often possible to see whales breaching from the beach. Ask the lodge to pack you a picnic lunch to take with you as you explore the area looking for the ultimate whale watching spot.
Enjoy a trip on the lodge's dhow; head out for a sunset cruise or take some rods and try to catch dinner in the prolific fishing spots close by.
Often described as a tiny island paradise that time forgot, Ihla de Mozambique is a crescent-shaped coral island and for four centuries it was the capital and trading centre of Portuguese East Africa, a rich bazaar of European, Arab and Indian cultures dominated by the continent’s most formidable fortress.
The people have a quiet dignity and smile easily. It is perfectly safe, even for women, to wander alone through the warren of streets and alleys at any time, day or night. Most of the population lives in Macuti Town in the south of the island, a low-lying sprawl of mud houses with palm-frond roofs, where fishing provides a subsistence economy. Yet there is no begging from foreign visitors, or any sense of resentment towards them.
