We've picked two of our favourites for 2020! MEMORIES OF THE RAJ - 13 Days from £ 2 199.00 per person sharing
To paraphrase Jane Austen, it is a truth universally acknowledged that the recent histories of India and Britain are inextricably intertwined. This tour will highlight how this relationship developed and finally evolved into Indian independence.
We’ll visit Calcutta, the capital of India during the time that it was governed by the mighty East India Company and discover how it developed its economic success with the famous tea estates in Darjeeling. We will also see the negative consequences, with the remains of the siege of the British Residency in Lucknow. Along the way, we’ll also visit India’s oldest city, Varanasi, the Holy City for Hindus, who come to bathe in the waters of the Ganges.
On this inspiring tour, we’ll also travel on the famous Indian Railway system, the largest in the world, en route to Varanasi. Spectacularly located along the Ganges, this spiritual city is known for its bustling atmosphere and the sights and sounds along the city’s famous bathing ‘ghats’, where it sometimes seems the whole of India has come to wash in the holy ‘Mother Ganges’. We’ll take an exciting rickshaw ride through the teeming streets and enjoy the sights from our boat ride on the river. Next morning, we will wake by sunrise to enjoy another peaceful boat ride along the soft, misty water.
Towards the end of the tour, you will be transported to tea lovers’ paradise; Darjeeling. Taking the famed steam ‘Toy Train’ from the famous hill station and epicentre of tea production, marvel at the peaks of the Himalayas, which can be seen in the distance. Be sure to rise early and join us at Tiger Hill, for the most memorable sunrises on a clear day. We will also head to a nearby Buddhist monastery in Ghoom, to understand their modest and peaceful way of life.
Of course, this is a great chance to try the authentic cuisine of the India, too. With a variety of stop offs and well-located hotels, you will be able to delight in some regional Indian dishes on most evenings. With New Delhi famously home to butter chicken and macher jhol (spicy fish curry) from Calcutta, there is plenty of variety for all tastes. Why not try some incredible Indian sweets, such as rosogulla (milk-based dessert) or a dhokla (a sweet made from chickpeas)?
This incredible trip really does bring together some fascinating treasures of the country, whether it be the remarkable history and architecture, the memorable landscapes or the amazing methods of transport, waiting to take you on an unforgettable journey.
THE MALDIVES - Cruising the South Male, Vaavu & Ari Atolls 16 Days from £ 3 189.00 per person sharing
Embark on a unique and unforgettable cruise exploring the best of the Maldives aboard the three-star MV Yasawa Princess. The Maldives is one of the lowest countries in the world, with coralline beaches at around four feet (1.2 metres) above sea level and its highest natural point measuring just under eight feet (2.4 metres). What makes these numerous tiny islands so special is that they’re actually the crowns of coral reefs and submerged volcanic mountains – in fact, just 1% of the Maldives is land-based, so one of the best ways to explore this archipelago is by boat. Its 1,192 coral islands are grouped in a double chain of 26 atolls, comprising ring-shaped coral reefs and sand bars. Only 200 of the islands are inhabited, which means there are many idyllic desert islands awaiting your fresh footprints on their unblemished shores.
From the mid-16th century, the region came under the influence of European colonial powers, from the Portuguese to the Dutch, with the Maldives becoming a British protectorate in 1887 until 1965.
Traditional Maldivian cuisine, which is influenced by neighbouring India and Sri Lanka, offers a tantalising variety of flavours. Local menus typically feature freshly caught fish and all manner of ingredients obtained from coconuts, such as its refreshing water, grated flesh and creamy milk – an essential element of many Maldivian curries and drinks. For breakfast, mas huni – grated coconut mixed with finely chopped tuna, onion and chilli – is often served with roshi, Maldivian flatbread similar to chapati. Western food will also be available on your ship if you want a taste of home.
Your days are filled with carefree pleasures, such as relaxing on pearly white-sand beaches in the shade of natural tropical vegetation, taking a dip in crystal waters of sparkling azure hues, and gazing at the glittering night sky. There are plenty of opportunities to snorkel beneath the warm waters of the Indian Ocean – your swimming pool for two weeks – and immerse yourself in remarkable underwater worlds. The average sea temperature ranges from 20 - 30 degrees. Blessed with natural reefs, the Maldives is home to fascinating marine life, from colourful tropical fish to whale sharks, manta rays and turtles. So kick off your shoes, forget the news, relax, rejuvenate and enjoy the welcoming hospitality of this unique island nation.
