THE GARDEN ROUTE
Officially South Africa's Garden Route extends from George in the Western Cape to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape and the route is one of South Africa's most beautiful and scenic drives. The Garden Route is a perfect self-drive holiday and a great extension to a Cape Town and Cape Winelands vacation.
Our guests often love to spend a couple of days on the Overberg Coast, an easy 2 hour drive from Cape Town with Hermanus at its heart. The coastal drive along False Bay is stunning and Hermanus itself is recognized as one of the top 12 land based whale watching sites in the world. (The season generally runs from June to end October but whales have been spotted as early as September).
Travel on through the smaller towns to Mossel Bay and George (a great stop off is Fancourt if you are a Golf Lover). Knysna and Plettenberg Bay are must see destinations before moving on to the Tsitsikamma with its lush forests. There's plenty to do and see en-route and its a great spot for easy but scenic walks.
Our guests often like to end their Garden Route drive in Port Elizabeth. If you are travelling with kids, why not extend your stay with a malaria-free safari at the highly acclaimed Shamwari Game Reserve?

The Hector Pietersen Museum with Antoinette Sithole
Antoinette Sithole is the sister to the late Hector Pieterson, who was killed by police in the June 16th, 1976 uprisings where students were protesting against being taught in the medium of Afrikaans. Hector Pieterson became a symbol for the uprisings as he was the youngest to be killed. Antoinette witnessed his death, and was the only survivor in the famous photo as seen on the left.
